Introducing Cam Clutches
Cam clutches are mechanical overrunning clutches that are often called backstop or one-way clutches. The names of cam clutches depend on the context. It primarily functions to transmit torque in one particular direction while letting the output axis to go on turning or freewheeling when the motor completely stops or just slows. That makes cam clutches suitable for small and large designs for packaging, conveying, off-highway material handling, turbine auxiliary drive and medical applications. Our mechanical overrunning clutches include bearings that use roller ramps, ratcheting, cam action and wrap spring for engagement of one-way axis. Our cam clutches, like all quality ones exhibit a very high torque density.

Technical Details
Of the known clutch designs, the cam clutch is relatively new and packed with power. Used famously in the transportation industry, a cam clutch is often called sprag clutch. In this clutch, a series of bars are set profiled with the cam-shaped, asymmetrical geometry ring which forms the clutch circumference. At each end, there are cages whose job is to ensure that the cams are spaced out evenly. When input rotation starts, the cams lock between the outer and inner races in the clutch halves starts working as rising wedges.
In some cam-clutch models, the cams fill the space in between the inner and outer races functioning as sprags to hold together the clutch halves by preventing any kind of friction. As the drive is reversed, the clutch quickly releases while enduring high overrun speeds. In some other models, centrifugal force causes the bar cams to change into liftoffs thereby disengaging the halves of the clutch. When the belt is slowed or reversed, the springs at the cam push it back into engagements that resemble sprags.
